From the beginning of the Legion baseball season, Reid Jungling knew he'd be getting the ball for the Mandan Chiefs in their Fourth of July showdown against the Bismarck Governors.
Jungling made the most of that showcase opportunity, shutting out the Governors on four hits as Mandan beat Bismarck for a second straight day, 4-0.
"He knew to get himself ready however he needed to,"said Chiefs coach Ryne Jungling, Reid's older brother. "He takes pitching pretty seriously, and he came out and just dealt today."
That he did.
Reid Jungling allowed Bismarck just six baserunners - two on bunt singles, one on a walk and one who reached by error. It took Jungling just 99 pitches - and 95 minutes - to complete the nine-inning victory.
Jungling, who had six strikeouts, said he did most of his damage with the change-up.
"I tried to get them out on their front foot, and once I got them out, I tried to keep on hitting that spot,"Jungling said.
"I had a pretty strong first inning, and I felt pretty well about it,"he said. "I just carried it on and tried to keep on doing what I was doing."
Jared Quast put Mandan on the board in the bottom of the second when he cranked out a solo homer just to the right of the screen in left field.
It was Quast's fourth homer of the season and second in as many days.
"He's been tearing the ball lately,"coach Jungling said. "All the hitters have been having really good approaches lately."
The Chiefs padded their lead with two runs in the third. Jacob Friesz reached on an infield single, and Brent Stoltz followed with a blooper to right. Jared Muth then beat out a bunt down the third-base line, loading the bases with no outs.
Bismarck starter Matt Chuppe got the next hitter, Jason Mellmer, to ground into a double play, though Friesz did score. Then Jungling helped his own cause, drilling a triple to right-center to make it 3-0.
Meanwhile, Jungling was cruising right along on the mound. The left-hander retired the first 10 hitters he faced. Alex Deyle's single in the fourth was the only baserunner he allowed through five innings.
The Governors finally threatened in the sixth without hitting a ball past the mound. Jon Herold laid a bunt that died right on the third-base line. Erik Peterson followed with another bunt. Jungling fielded it cleanly and thought he got Peterson, but the runner was ruled safe.
"Something like that's going to happen whether you like it or not," Jungling said. "… I shrugged my shoulders and just went out and felt confident Icould get those guys."
Jungling shook it off and retired the next three hitters to get out of the jam.
The Chiefs gave Jungling another run to work with in the bottom of the inning. Matt Keller and Quast opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Sam Salveson then delivered an RBI single, making it 4-0.
Jungling did the rest, surviving a Mandan throwing error in the ninth to preserve the shutout. The Governors only got two runners past first base all day and none past second.
"You have to tip your cap to their pitchers both days," Bismarck coach Mike Skytland said. "They really did a nice job of keeping us off-balance. When we did hit a ball, it seemed to be right at them."
The win was special for the Chiefs, who hadn't beaten their archrivals during the Independence Day series since 2003.
"It was huge, just to look at the crowd today and see all the people," Jungling said. "With the Hall of Fame going on, and those guys driving the distance to be here, Iwas really glad to see the team came to play for them."
Ryne Jungling was also pleased.
"I loved to play on the third and fourth," the Mandan coach said. "It's nice to see that we got two wins these two days. To come and sweep these guys at our place, which is what we should be doing, is huge.
"… But If we peak July fourth, that's bad," he added. "We still have places to improve, but today was probably one of our best games."
