KNUTSON FIFTH IN 200 FREE
INDIANAPOLIS - Minot's Dagny Knutson placed fifth in the 200-meter freestyle finals Wednesday at the U.S. national swimming championships with a time of 1:58.46.
That's good enough to qualify the 17-year-old for the world championships in Rome.
On Tuesday, Knutson took fourth in the 200 individual medley finals (2:11.11). Former Minot standout Matt Lowe was fifth in the men's 100 breaststroke (1:00.56).
GOLF
BALZER 3-0 IN CANADA
Mike Balzer of Bismarck won all three of his matches as the United States successfully defended its North America Cup junior golf championship.
Balzer played on the 19-under boys team as the U.S. captured its fifth straight championship against a Canadian team using a Ryder Cup format.
The U.S. won nine of 14 singles matches on Wednesday. Balzer defeated his opponent, Taylor Drolet of Calgary, 4-and-3.
In four-ball competition on Monday the American team took a 4-3 lead. The U.S. had a 5.5 to 1.5 advantage in Tuesday's two-ball play. The tournament concluded with singles on Wednesday.
The tournament was played at the Weston Golf Club in Toronto.
Other members of the winning U.S. 19-under boys team are Brian Campbell of Irvine, Calif.; Xander McDonald-Smith of Rockaway Park, N.Y.; Sean Elliott of Westfield, N.J.; Charles Valluzzo of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; Eli Mattioli of Fayetteville, Ark.; Nicholas Reach of Moscow, Pa., and Preston Valder of Yorba Linda, Calif.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
FORMER WIZARD HIRED AT
NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY
Antonio Reynolds-Dean, a former all-star forward for the Dakota Wizards, has been hired to be an assistant coach for the Northeastern University basketball team.
Reynolds-Dean averaged 18.7 points and a league-best 12.2 rebounds en route to winning the IBA rookie of the year award in 1999-2000.
