10 years ago (1998): Size and state tournament experience are one of the trademarks of this year's Class B all-state girls basketball team.
Four of the five first-teamers stand 5-foot-9 or taller, and three of the five played in this year's state tournament.
Jessie Slinde of Velva, Andrea Christensen of Watford City and Darcy Schmeling of South Heart helped their teams reach the state tournament, with Slinde's Aggies defeating Christensen's Wolves in the title game. They are joined on the first team by Ginger Schanilec of Minto and Lindsey Eliason of Central Valley.
Christensen, a 6-1 senior center, averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds for Watford City. She shot 58 percent from the field.
"Andrea has put in a lot of time to the game," Wolves coach Tom Suelze said.
Schmeling, a 5-10 forward, led South Heart to fifth place. The senior averaged 15.8 points and seven rebounds and shot 58.3 percent from the field.
"Darcy has the ability to make the other players around her better," South Heart coach Jerry Perdaems said.
20 years ago (1988): The 1988 Class A all-state football team reads like a college of professional honor squad. No players were named on both offense and defense. But the list includes several outstanding two-way players.
Take the state champion St. Mary's Saints, who had four players named to the first team. All of the Fab Four made significant contributions on both offense and defense.
So, with a little give and a little take from the Class A coaches who made the selections, the Saints placed Ken Kraft at quarterback, Russ Wald at guard, Steve Clooten on the defensive line and Monte Schmaltz at cornerback.
"Really, all of them had excellent years both ways," said St. Mary's coach Dan Smrekar.
Other WDA players named to the first team included offensive tackle Will Meeks of Century; kicker Jason Arenz of Mandan; center Jason Praus, running back Kyle Carlson and defensive back Chris Carlson of Dickinson; linebacker Jay Wandler of Dickinson Trinity; and defensive lineman Mike Stewart of Williston.
50 years ago (1958): St. Alexius A team and McKenzie took opening round victories as the Women's City Basketball League got underway.
St. Alexius stopped Shamrocks 27-13 and McKenzie turned back Capital Commercial College 34-18.
Alice Schwengler was high for St. Alexius with 13 and Frances Senger had seven for Shamrocks. Coletta Zahn had 19 for McKenzie while Bev Sayler had eight for CCC.
