Mike Balzer of Bismarck will get to test his skills against the best junior golfers in the nation.

Balzer won the state junior championship on Monday at King's Walk in Grand Forks and earned a berth into the national tournament.

"It's definitely going to be the biggest tournament I've ever played in," Balzer said. "I'm taking my game to the next level. I will get to match up against the best kids in the country."

Balzer will travel to Trump Resort in New Jersey July 17-24. July 17-18 will consist of practice rounds.

Balzer shot a 151 in 36 holes at King's walk to earn a berth into the national tournament. Balzer said it was some of the best golf he has played in unfavorable conditions.

"I fought through the conditions and pulled it off,"he said. "We had 30 to 40 mile an hour winds. When we teed off it was 55 degrees."

Balzer spent this past school year attending the Hank Haney Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, S.C.

"I knew I had a good chance (to qualify)," Balzer said. "My short game was really good."

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Hockey becomes the official state sport of Minnesota Wednesday.

Two hockey fans in the Legislature, Sens. Gen Olson, R-Minnetrista, and David Tomassoni, DFL-Chisholm, put the proposal in an economic development bill signed into law last month.

Fifth-graders from Groveland Elemnetary School in Minnetonka originated the idea two years ago when they visited the Capitol. They told Olson Minnesota should have a state sport and two of them pushed for hockey.

The senators agreed. They cited many reasons, from the extensive boys and girls hockey programs, to the state's five NCAA Division I college teams to its NHL team the Minnesota Wild.

Olson said it took work to get a hearing on the proposal, and once they did, they didn't waste time getting it passed. "We did it for the kids," she said.
