VAUGHAN TAKES REINS AT DSU

Dickinson State University has chosen University of Mary assistant Josh Vaughan as its head men's basketball coach.

Vaughan has been at U-Mary for three seasons, overseeing recruiting, player development and scouting. He moved to Bismarck from Fargo, where he was director of basketball operations at North Dakota State University.

Before moving to North Dakota, Vaughan served on the basketball staffs at Moorhead (Minn.) State and Wooford College in South Carolina. Vaughan's hometown is Braham, Minn. He played college basketball at NDSU.

Vaughan succeeds Justin Wetzel, who resigned last week after three seasons as Blue Hawks head coach.

SHANLEY BUMPS SAINTS OFF TOP OF POLL

With last week's victory over St. Mary's, Fargo Shanley assumed the top spot in the state Class AA football poll. The two teams swapped places. Unbeaten Shanley was ranked second last week.

Jamestown, Wahpeton and Devils Lake round out the top five in AA.

West Fargo, the only unbeaten, remains unbudging in the top spot in the the AAA poll.

Minot was knocked out of the top five after a Saturday loss to second-ranked Century, the defending state champion. Completing the top five in AAA are Bismarck, Fargo South and Legacy.

The polls are conducted by the state Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
