Unfortunately our nation is suffering through another violent tragedy in a school. To most Americans, this is a nightmare that absolutely must be dealt with effectively and with priority. We should not need to worry about schools and the other places our loved ones go every day.
When we see or read the news coverage on a shooting tragedy, immediately there is a pro-gun and anti-gun side to be taken by many. Both sides vigorously defend their position and that is where the energy seems to be spent. Anger and passion on both sides is understandable. Would ending gun ownership for all solve the problem? Would making it easier to legally carry a gun for defense solve the problem? Both sides may say their ideas would make us safer. Would either idea alone protect our loved ones from a violent attack? I think not because both are more philosophical positions and not real solutions.
North Dakota has a long history of taking care of our own communities on a state and local level. This is part of our culture. We do not wait for federal government solutions where one size fits all, if and when a decision is ever made. Effective solutions to this threat must come from within our state. As North Dakota citizens we must all provide support to elected officials and law enforcement so they can succeed.
We in North Dakota all have a common cause; protect our loved ones and make them as safe as we can wherever they are every day. We all need to continue with objective solutions with a sense of urgency. The risks are too high if we fail.
