Is there an easy way for Democrats to get elected in North Dakota? Yes, the old-fashioned way, give people something. Every working person could be given a 7 percent raise at no cost to the government. If people were not required to pay Social Security on any dollar they earned under $50,000 that would be a 7 percent raise.
How do you make up for the lost revenue? Currently those making over $124,000 don’t pay a cent on any amount they earn over that amount. Raise that to $174,000 and it all comes out even. Every hard-working person gets a break, and every higher-income person pays their share. Of course, you could raise the cap to $500,000 and solve all the Social Security and Medicare problems, but that would be more fairness than any Republican could stomach.
So this idea will be dropped quicker than President Donald Trump would drop a gun he was handed when he was asked to participate in a school shooting rescue. Your typical person earning less than the cap of $124,000 has no clue there is a cap. Republicans bent on protecting the wealthy are happy this obvious solution is kept quiet. Rep. Kevin Cramer said at his town hall in Mandan last summer that a cap of $250,000 was acceptable.
