We are appalled at the misguided effort to recall Washburn Mayor Larry Thomas. Not only the effort itself, but the way in which it was handled. It's an embarrassment to the good people of Washburn.
It was on the radio, in the Bismarck Tribune, as well as other places. It's about an open meeting violation that resulted in a new garbage contract. Also, supposedly harassing employees. The fact is, we have a new excellent garbage pickup provider. Thomas is also doing an excellent job as mayor. He and the city commissioners let a contract for a water, sewer and street project that was completed last year, about a million dollars under budget, which shows good common-sense leadership.
As many mayors of other cities know well, a mayor faces many pressures on the job, some of which are very petty. We do not want to spend our limited resources on a recall election over such petty matters. We hope the good citizens of Washburn will keep Thomas right where he's at, as mayor. Thank you Thomas, and commissioners, for all the good work you do.
William Knox, Washburn
