Pope Francis said, “When a person thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges; that person is not a Christian.”
Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s Great Wall of China was begun in 221 B.C.; the workers were made up of soldiers and convicts. Historians claim as many as 400,000 of them died during the wall's construction. Many of them were buried within the wall itself. Considering the size, effort and expense put into its construction, the failure of the wall was spectacular. It was a display of imperial power but it failed to keep invaders out.
Hadrian’s wall, begun in A.D. 122, during the reign of Roman emperor Hadrian, marked the northern limit of the Roman province of Britannia. It was a stone wall 80 miles long and was designed to keep the unconquered people of Scotland out of what is now England. It, too, failed.
The hated Berlin Wall was designed to keep East Berliners from fleeing into free West Berlin. We all know what happened to it.
President Donald Trump’s wall will cost $18 billion to build. Originally, he conned his followers into believing Mexico would pay for it. Now our pseudo-emperor is demanding American taxpayers pay for it. Building that wall will waste billions of taxpayer dollars and do serious harm to our trade relationship with Mexico, our third-largest trading partner, after China and Canada.
Trump said, “The wall is going to happen, or we’re not going to have DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).” Trump is holding 800,000 “American Dreamers” hostage. He has no concept of cause and effect as he doesn’t care one bit, that what he says or does can have horrible personal impacts on people. Trump has dragged his Republican party into the sewer.
