It’s no secret that Sen. Heidi Heitkamp is a swing vote on tax reform, and she’s facing enormous pressure from both sides. That’s because Heitkamp is one of a few members left in the U.S. Senate who genuinely votes her conscience, not her party line.

As we learn more details about the tax proposals in Congress, I'm grateful to have Heitkamp looking out for our state. Frankly, I don’t care if it’s a Republican or Democratic bill. I care if it’s sound policy. Does it help middle-class families? Does it protect my family’s retirement savings? Is it paid for or does it increase the deficit? That’s what I care about, and I believe that’s what Heitkamp cares about, too.

If tax reform meets these standards of good public policy, I know Heitkamp will support it. If it doesn’t, she’ll oppose it. That’s what Heitkamp has done as long as she’s been our senator, and I trust her to continue putting our interests first.
