As I am getting ready to go south for the winter I contacted the Bismarck water department to have my water turned off for the winter. I was very surprised and frustrated to find out that not only have they changed the on/off fee from $5 to $17 (each time) but beginning 1/1/18 they will be charging a minimum fee per month that will be more than the monthly fee I am paying right now with my water turned on.
Understand after Jan. 1 with my water turned off and no water flowing from the city I will pay more than what I pay right now with my water on and city water flowing to my home. What? This is the mayor and city commission squeezing every penny they can out of Bismarck city residents. I should not have to pay for water or garbage pickup that I do not use while I am away from my Bismarck residence.
I do not have a problem paying for sewer maintenance, street lighting and recycling even though I don't do recycling and we don't have street lighting on my street because we are on a private, non-city street. So, fellow city residents and especially senior citizens, be wary — the mayor and city commission are putting another hand on our limited income although most of them probably don't even know what they have done.
