BISMARCK, N.D. _ Secretary of State Al Jaeger says he has received a proposed ballot measure that would change the constitution to set aside money for conservation.

The proposed Clean Water, Wildlife and Parks Amendment would set aside 5 percent of the state’s oil extraction tax for a fund to provide grants for conservation, recreation and education.

Earlier estimates, based on 2012 figures, indicated that would mean $44 million a year for the fund.

In a statement Wednesday, Jaeger said he and the attorney general have five to seven business days to draft a petition title to give it to the measure’s supporters for circulation.

A similar proposal was thrown out last year after fake petition signatures were found.
