JAMESTOWN (AP) - Clay and sandbag dikes put up in March for flood protection are finally being removed in Jamestown.

City engineer Reed Schwartzkopf says contracts were awarded Thursday. He says they give workers 30 days to remove the dikes. Homeowners who built private dikes can have that material cleared if they move it to the boulevard.

Officials say the city's sanitary sewer system has improved, but they're still asking residents to keep on an odd-even rotation for heavy water use for a couple of weeks. That means residents in even-numbered houses do the jobs that require the most use of water and sewer on even-numbered days, while people in odd-numbered houses take care of those tasks on odd-numbered days.

Schwartzkopf says it seems to be working.
