DICKINSON (AP) - About a dozen Dickinson State University students have appealed disciplinary action taken by the school against them after a September off-campus fight and burglary, a university official says.
A hearing on the appeals is scheduled Nov. 18, said Hal Haynes, Dickinson State's vice president of student development. The hearing will be closed to the public, he said.
Officials said earlier that charges ranging from terrorizing to disorderly conduct and underage drinking were filed after a Sept. 6 fight at a Dickinson home. It was believed to have started after a 16-year-old boy was kicked and punched.
The morning after the fight, officials said, a flat screen TV worth $500 was taken from the home.
Haynes would not disclose details about the disciplined students except to say all are associated with Dickinson State athletic programs. He said 14 students originally appealed but two later withdrew from the school. One student was cleared of charges.
The students had been put on probation and were ordered to forfeit their aid from the university, Haynes said. Federal student aid was not affected, he said. The students also were told they could not publicly represent the university.
The Stark County state's attorney's office said one student enrolled in DSU's wrestling program was cleared of charges involving the fight and burglary.
The appeals hearing marks the first time in four years that the university's Hearing Board has been convened, Haynes said. The board is made up of four DSU faculty members, four students and two staff members.
"Every student that gets their opportunity before the hearing board is allowed to present their evidence and their case," Haynes said. The students may have lawyers with them, he said.
The board will decide whether the university discipline was appropriate, and will give Haynes a recommendation.
"In the end, the decision will be at the Office of Student Development," he said.
If the sanctions include suspension or a fine of $500 or more, the students may appeal to the office of the president, he said.
