GRAND FORKS (AP) - An airman from the Grand Forks Air Force Base was charged Tuesday with shooting another man in the leg, apparently to try to scare him in a dispute over a woman, police said.

Terrence Anderson, 21, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment. Magistrate David Vigeland set bail at $500,000 on the attempted murder charge and at $100,000 on each of the other charges, and set a preliminary hearing for June 25.

Police said the victim, Terrence Murray, 22, also from the Grand Forks Air Force Base, was shot in the thigh outside an apartment complex just before 3 p.m. Monday.

Witnesses said they heard two men arguing, then four or five gunshots.

"Two or three gentlemen had some conflict regarding a young lady that boiled over into this shooting," Police Capt. Kerwin Kjelstrom said Tuesday. "Two people both liked the same lady. They were kind of at each other. This guy was just overhearing all this and decided he'd help out by scaring somebody."

Kjelstrom said Anderson was in a car as he drove by the complex.

"Two gentlemen came out of the building. The person in the car fired five or six rounds at them, one of the rounds striking the gentleman," he said.

Officers said they found spent shell casings and bullets at the scene, and a handgun was found in the vehicle driven by Anderson. Kjelstrom said Anderson came voluntarily to the police station for questioning, and was arrested around 9 p.m. Monday.
