WASHINGTON (AP) - A Senate spending plan includes millions of dollars for flood control in North Dakota and Minnesota.

North Dakota Sen. Byron Dorgan says the funding will help the Army Corps of Engineers move forward on flood control studies for the two states.

A Senate appropriations panel led by Dorgan approved the plan Wednesday. It includes $1.9 million for a flood control study in Fargo-Moorhead, $2.6 million for a permanent flood control project in Grand Forks, N.D., and East Grand Forks, Minn., and $5 million for a flood control project for Wahpeton, N.D., and Breckenridge, Minn.

Rivers and streams across North Dakota flooded in March and April. Fargo was threatened by the Red River and Bismarck dealt with huge ice jams on the Missouri River.

Meanwhile, it was announced that federal grants and disaster loans to victims of the record spring flooding in North Dakota have surpassed the $50 million mark.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says about $54 million in aid has been delivered. State residents also have filed flood insurance claims totaling $11.3 million.

Just under 6,500 North Dakotans have registered for individual disaster assistance. Flood victims have about another month to apply for aid.
