Why wait for a disaster to strike?

In response to the June 5 article about storm shelters, I would like to commend Morton County Emergency Manager Tom Doering for requesting the Mandan courthouse and City Hall be opened to the 2,561 people residing in mobile homes and apartments.

Burleigh County Emergency Manager Mary Senger, on the other hand, said neither Burleigh County nor Bismarck has any designated shelters for the 2,800 mobile homes for 5,800 people.

She suggests we get a weather radio and make “arrangements.” Apparently it’s that simple to Mary. She doesn’t live in a mobile home.

Why can’t the Civic Center be opened like it was years ago? Why wait for a disaster to happen?
