Obama will help with rising college costs

I just sent my daughter off to college, and I am amazed at the cost. I would sacrifice anything to give my children a college education, but these days even public universities' tuitions are rising at a frightening rate.

I'm hoping we will hear more coverage about what the presidential candidates plan to do about the cost of higher education. It's important to me that my children don't graduate from college under a mountain of debt. Unfortunately, John McCain has never voted to increase any form of federal financial aid for working class or middle class students, not even the amount of money students can borrow from the federal government in the face of rising tuition rates.

Given the economic squeeze that American families are feeling these days, increasing college financial aid seems like a win-win proposal. It eases families' economic burdens and also invests in our country's future. Barack Obama gets it. Obama's first bill in Congress increased the maximum Pell Grant amount a college student can receive. Obama has also proposed giving working families a break with a $4,000 tax credit for college expenses.

As my daughter and I pay her college bills this fall, the November bill will be a great reminder that only one candidate on the ballot is thinking about the cost of a college education to my family. My children have worked hard for the opportunity to get a college education. I trust Barack Obama to make sure they actually get to take advantage of that opportunity.
