ELGIN — Shawn Vilhauer, 58, Elgin, passed away Sept. 23, 2017, at his home. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. MDT Saturday, Oct. 7, at Zion Lutheran Church, Elgin. The Rev. Brian Knutson will officiate with a private family burial to be held at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday afternoon.
Shawn Scott Vilhauer was born Sept. 4, 1959, in Elgin, the son of Victor and Florence (Kapsch) Vilhauer. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1978. While in high school he held various offices and was very active in FFA. He earned every degree available in FFA, including the American Farmer Degree, given at the National level, which he received in Kansas City, Mo., in 1980. Shawn remained active in the Elgin Alumni FFA Chapter following high school. He graduated from Bismarck Junior College in 1980 with an associate degree of applied science in farm and ranch management. Shawn owned and operated the same farm land that his father and grandfather had owned and operated before him. He moved to Elgin in the early 2000s and resided there until the time of his death. Shawn drove school bus for many years for Elgin High School and worked for the Elgin Vet Service. He also enjoyed helping friends with their farming operations, most recently working for the Haas Brothers of Elgin.
Shawn is survived by his sister, Connie Heupel and nephew, Chad Koepplin, both of Elgin; and many cousins and very special friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Monty and Virgil Vilhauer; his niece, Kelly Conitz; and great-nephew, Logan Conitz.
