Malcolm Halvorson

Malcolm Allen Halvorson, passed away Nov. 29, 2017, at Sanford Health, Bismarck, surrounded by his family who loved him so very much.

Malcolm was born Aug. 29, 1926, the first of six children. He was born to Gerhard and Ella (Anseth) Halvorson in the Good Samaritan Hospital in Rugby. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. His grade school years were in the Brazil school district, and he graduated from Rugby High School in 1943.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served in the CBs in the South Pacific until he was honorably discharged in July 1946. He graduated from Wahpeton School of Science and worked as an electrician in Harvey and Cando. In 1951, he returned to the family farm due to his father’s health problems.

On June 27, 1953, he married Alice Lorraine Humble at the Wolford Lutheran Church. They farmed and had a dairy herd until 1984, when their son Jeffery and daughter-in-law JoClaire became third generation farmers. Malcolm held township offices and served a three year term on the Baker Electric Board in Cando. During this time, the family was members of Bethel Lutheran Church and later First Lutheran Church in Rugby.

In September 1984, they moved to Rugby and Malcolm continued to help Jeffery on the farm. In 1988, Malcolm and Alice moved to Rice Lake, south of Minot, and were employed by the Farstad family. While at Rice Lake, Malcolm designed and built 13 life-like elk from metal. They can still be seen today on Elk Ridge, located near the Homesteader’s Restaurant in Minot. They continued to work for Farstads at Rice Lake and Minot until March 2011. They moved to Edgewood Vista retirement home in Bismarck in March 2011.

Malcolm was a typical farmer during the 50s, 60s, and 70s. He was able to repair machinery, build buildings, and design a plan as they remodeled their farm home in early 1970. He also built a home for his parents in 1955 in Rugby. He enjoyed helping his neighbors. He enjoyed playing pinochle, attending dances, and family reunions.
