Kathy Hertz, 59, Bismarck and recently of Fargo, died Nov. 30, 2013, at Sanford Health Palliative Care, Fargo, after a 3½-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Kathleen Lee Shephard was born in Fargo on July 31, 1954, the daughter of Robert and Patricia (Brunelle) Shephard. She graduated from Bismarck High School in 1972 and Bismarck Junior College in 1974. In 2002, she was fortunate enough to marry her true love and soul mate, Don Hertz.

Kathy worked at Job Service North Dakota from 1975 until her retirement in 2009. The last 25 years of her employment at Job Service were in the Human Resource Department, which she loved. However, her most rewarding job was the honor (and challenge!) of being caregiver to Don, who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease and other health issues for many years.

Kathy is survived by her beloved husband, Don; her daughters, Leah (Gus) Staahl, West Fargo, and Suzanne (Henry) Brucker, Aitkin, Minn.; her sons, Donald (Esta) Hertz, Fountain Hills, Ariz., and Dustin (Jodi) Hertz, Franklin, Tenn.; her grandchildren, Griffin and Ian Staahl, Joe and Alexandra Brucker, Tori and Jesse Helbling and Jonah, Joshua and Joseph Hertz; her parents, Patricia and Tom Barr, Fargo; her sisters, Barbara (Jim) Johnson and Leslie Miller, both of Fargo, and Kelly (Doug) Muscha, Colfax; and her brother, Tom Barr, Omaha, Neb. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and a special aunt, Maxine, aka “Auntie Boo”.

Kathy was preceded in death by her grandparents; her baby sister, Pammy; and special uncle, Curt.

The family offers a special thanks to followers of Kathy’s Caring Bridge site and to all the special friends who helped her and Don these last challenging years.

An informal celebration of Kathy’s life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at Whispering Creek Community Room, 2651 Whispering Creek Circle, Fargo. A private memorial service will be held at Hanson-Runsvold Funeral Home, Fargo.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York, N.Y. 10163-4777. In accordance with Kathy’s wishes, her corneas were donated to the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank.

The Bismarck Tribune runs two types of obituaries. A paid and a free version. A paid obituary is $12 per column inch. It can include just about anything, including a black and white photo. For an additional $15, you can run the photo in full color. There is also a $5 setup fee and for this the family receives 10 copies of the newspaper. (For example: When measuring the column, if it were eight inches, the total cost would be $101.00 — $12 x 8, plus the $5 fee). If you would like to run the obituary more than once, the fees are as follows: second run, $8 per inch; and third run, $6 per inch. Paid notices are charged at $12 per inch and can include any kind of information. If you want the paid obituary or notice, we can call with the exact amount after publication. E-mail address is obits@bismarcktribune.com. Photos should be attached as jpg files. Please include a billing address and a day-time phone number in case there are questions.
