Ian Matthew Hopfauf (known affectionately as “Pooklet”), 9, died peacefully on Nov. 16, 2009, at home lovingly surrounded by all who he loved most after fiercely battling cancer for over 18 months. Services will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at Boulger Funeral Home, Fargo, with a silent prayer service from 7 to 8 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Ian was born in Bismarck on Oct. 18, 2000. He was a bright, creative, charming child who loved to laugh nearly as much as he loved to make others laugh. He brought joy to so many with his kind, thoughtful words and his loving gestures. He was wise and compassionate far beyond his years. He delighted in surprising people with silly pranks. Ian enjoyed swimming and was very proud that he “conquered the high board” at the pool this summer. He had a wild, vivid imagination which he expressed through art, writing and great conversation. Ian loved spending time with friends, particularly his best friend and brother, Spencer. Ian was a third grader at Clara Barton-Hawthorne elementary school in Fargo.
Ian will be missed by all who knew him. There will forever be a void in our hearts which was once filled with Ian’s beautiful, joyous presence.
Ian is survived by his parents and stepparents, Rich K. Stewart and Rachael Rudnik and DeAnn Hopfauf and Paula Geroy; his brother, Spencer Hopfauf; his paternal grandparents, Edward and Catherine Kangesier, Freeport, N.Y.; his maternal grandparents, Ronald and Verdel Hopfauf, Bismarck; as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Ian’s name to the Clara Barton-Hawthorne PTA, Roger Maris Cancer Center, Meritcare Children’s Hospital or Kamp Kace as all of these organizations provided so much comfort and support to Ian during his battle with cancer.
