Freda was born July 28, 1923, on a farm in Pretty Rock Township, south of Elgin, to Johannes and Wilhelmina Wegner, the youngest girl in a family of nine children.
At age 16, Freda left the farm and moved to Elgin where she worked at the local grocery store. At age 18, she earned her GED and set off for Bismarck to attend nursing school. She graduated in the first LPN class at the St. Alexius Hospital School of Nursing. She completed specialized training as an intensive care nurse, spending her entire career at St. Alexius Hospital.
While living in Bismarck, Freda met Frank Huber. On Sept. 20, 1948, they were married at Trinity Lutheran Church, where they maintained lifelong membership. Frank and Freda enjoyed spending time at their cabin at Lake Tschida, boating, fishing, and planting numerous trees and gardens. In retirement, they enjoyed many travels together.
Freda was an active community volunteer. She was recognized as State Volunteer of the Year by the Boys and Girls Ranch Thrift Stores. She was also named as State Mrs. Eagle for her volunteer work with that organization. She was a member of the Elkettes, and spent many hours working on quilts as part of her church’s quilting circle.
Freda is survived by her children, Linda (Charles) Axness, Moorhead, Minn., and Lee (Debra) Huber, Bismarck; grandchildren, Jonathan (Sarah) Huber, Bismarck, Dr. Jacqueline Huber, Fargo, and Danette (Ty) Krumwiede, Minot; two great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
