Esther Loraine (Zimmerman) Werre, 87, Valley View Assisted Living, passed away with family by her side at CHI St. Alexius Medical Center Nov. 9, 2017. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Bismarck Funeral Home, Bismarck, with The Rev. Susan Anderson officiating.
Esther was born Aug. 9, 1930, in Bismarck to Gottlieb and Marie (Winkler) Zimmerman. She grew up on their farm south of Tappen. She graduated from Napoleon High School in 1948 as valedictorian.
On Sept. 26, 1948, Esther married Arthur Werre at Peace Lutheran Church in Napoleon. They lived south of Tappen, on the family farm for 31 years. In 1979, they retired and moved to Napoleon.
She was an active member of Glueckstal Lutheran Church. She served as organist, Sunday school teacher, and participated in choir.
Esther and Art gardened and traveled extensively in their retirement. They traveled to Germany twice. Esther was able to visit with her German relatives each time. They loved seaside and mountain vacations. Esther continued to travel with family and friends after Art’s passing. She enjoyed both East and West coasts.
Esther loved farming and playing the piano and organ. She wrote poetry, did water coloring, quilting, and loved playing cards.
She is survived by her daughters, Sylvia (Tom) Scherr, Sharon (Robert) Gengler; her son, Jeffrey (Sue Berger) Werre, and her son-in-law, Gaylynn Becker; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; and her brother, Irvin (Jackie) Zimmerman.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; her parents, Marie and Gottlieb; her daughter, Linda Becker; three brothers; and one sister.
Mom, yours was a life well lived. Enjoy peace and joy in eternity.
