A $2.5 million roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of North Dakota Highway 1804 and North Washington Street in Bismarck, following the Burleigh County Commission's authorization of the project Monday night.

"We've had some fatalities at that location," said Marcus Hall, county engineer. "From a safety perspective, it's a really good idea."

The county has some experience working with roundabouts, and they seem to be working "pretty well," he said.

The commission also approved the paving of North Washington Street from 57th Avenue Northwest to North Dakota Highway 1804, which will tie into the roundabout project.

The bid opening for the paving of North Washington Street will be later this fall. The paving portion of the project will be funded by the North Dakota Department of Transportation.

The county will be responsible for about 5 percent of the total construction cost of the roundabout, as well as $200,000 for the design work and $400,000 for construction administration.
