The Bismarck Mandan Garden Club invites area gardeners to learn about apple trees, honeyberries and haskaps during its first meeting of the 2018 season, set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Bismarck Public Library Meeting Room A.
Tom Kalb, Extension horticulturist for North Dakota State University, will present "Growing Apples in the Backyard," with an emphasis on pruning.
Kalb was raised on a farm in Minnesota, where his family grew a commercial apple orchard and 15 acres of vegetables and berries. In his work at NDSU, Kalb has written numerous publications on fruits and vegetables, coordinates the state’s Junior Master Gardener program and is the author of the NDSU Yard & Garden Report, a newsletter for gardeners.
Meigan Cameron, president of the club, will discuss haskaps and honeyberries. Cameron is a North Dakota Master Gardener and the North Dakota State Horticultural Society's senior vice president. Meeting participants will receive handouts on juneberries and strawberries.
The Bismarck Mandan Garden Club meets the third Tuesday of the month from February to May, September and October. Garden tours are June through August. Yearly dues are $15.
