Bismarck police were called after a man reported an unknown male sprayed him with pepper spray, threw a few punches then stole his phone.

Bismarck Police Sgt. Mark Buschena said officers met the injured 33-year-old Bismarck man early Saturday at a hotel.

The man told police that a 6-foot-tall male between 20 and 50 with short black hair and wearing a black coat knocked on the door of his residence on the 100 block of American Avenue, around 1 a.m. Saturday. While the alleged attacker knew the resident's name, the victim told police he'd never before seen the man.

He let the man use his phone to make a few calls but the alleged attacker wasn’t able to reach anyone. Then the man reportedly sprayed the resident in the face with pepper spray, punched him twice on the left side of his head and ran off with his $100 phone.

The resident told police he rinsed his eyes and met a friend at a gas station to drive and meet the officers at the hotel.
