Bismarck police have identified a man killed on a Bismarck work site on Sunday.

Lucas J. Volker, 36, of Sartell, Minn., was crushed while a piece of pipe was being lowered into a trench on the 500 block of River Road. A backhoe slipped and rotated to the side where Volker was standing, crushing his chest and abdomen at approximately 1:15 p.m.

The Bismarck Fire Department helped to remove Volker from the trench. He was transported to Sanford Health, where he was declared dead.

Volker was working for S.J. Louis Construction Inc. of Rockville, Minn. at Bismarck’s new $16 million water intake system. Work on the project resumed this summer after a year’s delay due to the 2011 Missouri River flood.

The incident is under investigation, and a report is being forwarded to Occupational Safety & Health Administration.
