Occupants of an apartment building were evacuating at 7:15 a.m. Tuesday as firefighters in Bismarck arrived to investigate, finding smoke and flames in one unit.

First responders extinguished the fire and ventilated the building on the 500 block of Memorial Highway, the city of Bismarck reported.

More firefighters arrived to assist, totaling 18 firefighters and five rigs. Bismarck Police and Metro Area Ambulance were on scene to assist as well.

Though the affected apartment was occupied, no one was inside at the time of the incident. 

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
