A 6-year-old girl is hospitalized after nearly drowning in a swimming pool.
At 1:46 p.m., the Mandan Police Department received a 911 call from the community center, Police Chief Dennis Bullinger said. Someone was performing CPR on the girl when they arrived. It is not known how long she was underwater.
She was taken to St. Alexius Medical Center and was in the pediatric intensive care unit, Bullinger said. Her family was with her, he said, but he didn't know her condition.
"Our prayers and wishes go out to the girl … we are praying for her to pull through," said Cole Higlin, Mandan Parks and Recreation director.
The Bismarck girl was on a field trip with the Kids Club from Riverside Elementary School. They went to the Mandan Community Center swimming pool for recreational swimming. The Kids Club is an after-school and summer program for students in Bismarck in conjunction with the YMCA.
It is common for the school-sponsored summer day care program to provide field trips to the swimming pool. Sometimes the groups go to the pool in Mandan because of scheduling, Bismarck Superintendent Paul Johnson said.
The district will look at what field trips are upcoming, but Johnson doesn't expect any changes.
"During the summer, it (swimming) is a typical activity," he said.
Since he has worked for the district, he cannot recall a similar accident. Summer programs also have expanded during that time, he said.
