Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Tim Mathern will unveil his plan for middle class tax breaks Monday, his campaign announced on Friday.

Mathern will detail his plan in Bismarck at 10 a.m. at The Kennedy Center, 1902 E. Divide Ave.

The announcement comes days after GOP candidate, Gov. John Hoeven, announced his tax plan on Tuesday.

Hoeven's plan would give $300 million in property tax cuts and another $100 million in direct income tax relief, according to his campaign.

Mathern's campaign also took a swipe at his opponent Friday, criticizing Hoeven's "lack of leadership in addressing the gasoline shortages confronting cities like Fargo and Grand Forks," according to a campaign statement.

Mathern said North Dakota should construct oil refineries to reduce fuel costs and that Hoeven has not done enough to build them in the state.

The statement from the Mathern campaign also criticized Justin Kringstad, director of the state's Pipeline Authority.

"An office in name only can't possibly get the job done," the campaign statement says, adding Kringstad is a recent college graduate and nephew of a Hoeven contributor.

Hoeven's campaign responded Friday, calling Mathern's statements "inaccurate and offensive."

"He's once again confusing sound bite with sound policy," the Hoeven campaign said.
