Mandan police handled two cases of people allegedly making threatening gestures with guns over the weekend.

In the first case, officers ended up in a foot pursuit with drawn weapons as the suspect ran from the area, Deputy Chief Paul Leingang said.

He said officers were called to northwest Mandan at 11:17 p.m. Friday for a report of a man firing shots after a verbal argument with a woman.

An officer located the man near an intersection in northwest Mandan based on a description given by witnesses, Leingang said. He said the man began walking faster when a squad car pulled up near him. As the officer identified himself and ordered the man to stop, the man proceeded to walk faster, then run, from officers.

The officer drew his gun and chased the man on foot, Leingang said.

He said the man ended up going into a garage about seven blocks from where the pursuit began, and the man continued to disobey commands from officers and put his hand into his waistline.

One of the officers changed from his sidearm to a Taser and used the device on the man to get him to the ground,Leingang said. He said the man continued to not follow commands once on the ground, so the officer used the Taser again.

Leingang said a .380 handgun was recovered. The man was arrested on misdemeanor charges. He had not been charged by Monday afternoon, according to court documents.

Leingang commended Officers Daniel Poppe and Michael Kapella for turning to a less-lethal option than a handgun in resolving the situation. "It really just showed good judgment on the officers' parts," he said.

In the second case, a Mandan man was arrested and charged for terrorizing, Leingang said. Alahaji Kanneh, 20, was charged Monday with Class C felony terrorizing.

Leingang said officers were dispatched to southeast Mandan for a report of a man threatening a woman with a gun. Officers found Kanneh on Third Avenue Southeast. Kanneh denied having a gun and no gun was found on him, Leingang said.
