A Bismarck woman who told police she was unsure where her 6-week-old infant was has been charged with three counts of child abuse and neglect.
Rachel Chase, 36, was charged with the three Class Cfelonies Monday. South Central District Judge Bruce Romanick set bond for Chase at $4,500 cash or surety and prohibited her from contacting her children unless authorized by social services.
Bismarck Police Lt. Randy Ziegler said officers were dispatched to a northwest Bismarck home for a report of a suicidal subject at 6:50 p.m. Saturday. At the home, they found Chase, who was not suicidal but was extremely intoxicated. Her 5-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter were in the house, but an officer knew she also has a 6-week-old child, Ziegler said. When asked where that child was, Chase said she was unsure.
Detectives were called to help on the case, and the baby was eventually located at 4:50 a.m. Sunday at a south Bismarck home, Ziegler said. He said the children were placed with relatives.
Burleigh County Assistant State's Attorney Pamela Nesvig said the 5-year-old boy told officers he thought the baby was dead. Nesvig said the children were dirty.
