An intoxicated ex-boyfriend, who arrived at his girlfriend's home at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday and asked to play with their infant son, reportedly became upset when she declined to wake up the baby for playtime.

He then pushed her, grabbed her collar - and then went into the living room, got a rifle, took it outside and fired two shots at an unknown direction, said Morton County Sheriff Dave Shipman.

When the man, 28, came back into the house to find she was calling for help, he reportedly told her, "They better come loaded,"Shipman said.

The boyfriend then left before the arrival of a Morton County sheriff's deputy.

Shipman said the boyfriend isn't being sought at this time, but the department "is going to look into this further."

He said after the deputy responded to the scene, the woman and her 9-month-old son initially were going to stay at her home, which is south of Mandan near State Highway 1806, but the deputy was able to convince her to stay elsewhere that night.

Shipman said the woman told the deputy she didn't know where the boyfriend could be found. Shipman said the deputy decided not to pursue charges in the matter after the woman told the deputy she didn't feel in fear for her safety or her child's safety.

She also said the boyfriend had acted this way in the past.

But Shipman said he thinks "there are still unanswered questions in this report,"and that additional follow-up needs to be done.
