Dakotas top ag-producing states ranking

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - The state's farmers and ranchers ranked in the top 10 nationally in 21 categories of crop and livestock production last year.

South Dakota ranked third in spring wheat, sixth in all wheat production, eighth in soybeans and 10th in corn grown for grain, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Ag Statistics Service.

Highlights of the livestock industry include a third place ranking in lambs born, fifth for all sheep and lambs and market sheep and lambs, sixth in the number of calves born, seventh in the number of cattle and calves on feed, and eighth for the number of all cattle and calves.

South Dakota also ranked seventh in the nation in harvested acres for all principal crops.

The state retained its number one rank for bison production in 2006, reporting just over 40,000. That was about 10,000 more than second-ranked North Dakota.

Sunflower seed production in South Dakota ranked second in the nation with 437.6 million pounds produced. The state ranked second in 2005 as well and trailed North Dakota which produced more than 1.1 billion pounds last year.

South Dakota producers also had the second-highest production in proso millet in 2006, and third in production of flax seed and lambs.

South Dakota honey production fell from third in the U.S. in 2005 to fourth in 2006. The state's honey producers reported just over 10.5 million pounds in 2006. That was behind North Dakota (25.9 million), California (19.7 million) and Florida (13.7 million).
