The Mandan Braves boys hockey team recently hosted Pucks 4 People, an annual event to help people in the community. This year it was held Feb. 10 during the last home game of the season at the Starion Sports Complex.
Each year the team identifies an individual or family who has experienced unexpected hardship or illness. The recipient of over $7,000 raised this year is Cooper Peterson, 3, son of Al and Tiffany Peterson.
Since being diagnosed two years ago with neurofibromatosis and bilateral optic glioma Cooper has undergone hospital stays, chemotherapy and surgeries. He and his family have had to travel to Fargo and Minneapolis for medical care.
Cooper was unable to attend the game because he was recovering from a hospital stay in Fargo. His parents, however, were there to drop the puck before the start of the game.
The team’s fundraising efforts included soliciting donations fron businesses, holding a silent auction and bake sale and selling T-shirts and game jerseys. The Braves girls hockey team also sold raffle tickets during the game.
