Students awarded
Fifty-five University of Mary student-athletes are 2009-10 recipients of the Division II Athletic Director Association Academic Achievement Awards presented by WeatherPORT. The Academic Achievement Awards is a program that recognizes the academic accomplishments of student-athletes at the Division II level.
In order for a student-athlete to receive the award, they must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, have attended a minimum of two years (four semesters) of college level work and have been an active member of an intercollegiate team during his/her last academic year

Language village
Landon Schadler participated in the Concordia Language Villages program by attending Waldsee, the German Language Village located in Bemidji, Minn. He received the Global Citizen Scholarship sponsored by the Raer Family Fund of the FM Area Foundation. He is the son of Melinda and Alan Schadler, Fargo, and the grandson of MaryLou and Tony Johs, Janet Funston and Albert Schadler, all of Bismarck.
By attending Waldsee, Schadler experienced a simulated visit to another country. By interacting with staff from all over the world, he also learned about the many opportunities available to those who speak more than one language.
Anderson graduates
Erika Anderson, the daughter of DeNae Kautzmann and Peter Anderson, Mandan, graduated from Creighton Dental School in Omaha, Neb., during the colleges 131st exercises held on May 15. She received a doctorate of dental surgery.
In addition, Anderson was honored at the Awards Ceremony on May 14. She received the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Award, the Dentsply Tulsa Dental Endodontics Award, the Dr. Stanley J. Honsa Award, the International Congress of Oral Implantologists Achievement Award and the American Student Dental Association Award of Excellence. She was also recognized for her volunteer service at the One World Clinic. Anderson has joined the Dr. Jeffrey A. Sisel Dental Office in Arlington, Va.
Scholarships given
Vue Community Credit Union recently announced the 2010-11 winners of the Jack E. Eakman Scholarship. The annual scholarship is open to Vue members who are high school seniors planning to attend college in the fall of 2010 and those currently enrolled in college for the school year.
Each student submitted a written essay of 500 words or less addressing the question, “What is your college major and what factors determined this major? How has the recent unemployment rate factored in on this decision?”
Recipients of the $500 scholarship include: Seth Eberle, North Dakota State University; Lisa Makedonski, NDSU; Cody Wass, NDSU; Matthew Lech, Minnesota State University Moorhead; Rachel Durkee, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities; Callie Beauchamp, University of North Dakota; Christine Sorenson, UND; and Kelsi Thunshelle, NDSU.
Scholarship given
The North Dakota Propane Gas Association awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Michael McGrath, Bismarck. He was among over 100 applicants for four individual $1,000 scholarships.
McGrath is the son of Mike and Diane Paul and their supplier is Farmers Union, Hazen.
Area runners up were Steve Kraft, New Salem, son of Steven and Julie Kraft and their supplier was Rud Oil and Gas, Center; and Jessica Rott, Anamoose, daughter of James and Kimberlee Rott and their supplier was Ziegler Oil, Drake.
The North Dakota Propane Gas Association Scholarship Program began in 1993 and has awarded $28,000 in scholarships to North Dakota seniors attending a North Dakota college. Applicants for the scholarship must have a parent who is bulk propane supplied by a N.D. Propane Gas Association member.
Dollars for Scholars
North Dakota Dollars for Scholars has announced that 54 North Dakota college-bound students are getting $37,000 in scholarships going into the next school year.

Podrebarac gets 1st
Sally Podrebarac, a Minot State University junior music performance major, won first prize in the 28 years of age and younger category at the 2010 “International Women’s Brass Conference Solo Competition” in the horn division and was among the finalists for the grand prize. The competition was held in Toronto. Podrebarac is a Bismarck native and student of Mark Boren, MSU coordinator of brass studies.
She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James Podrebarac of Bismarck, and has achieved numerous awards for her horn performance. In addition to being principal horn with the MSU Concert Band, Podrebarac also plays principal horn with the Minot Symphony Orchestra.
For the past two years, Podrebarac earned first chair responsibilities with the North Dakota Intercollegiate Concert Band, which comprises the best musicians selected from seven higher education campuses in North Dakota. In addition to her two years attending MSU under the tutelage of Boren, Podrebarac has represented Minot State at such summer music festivals as the San Francisco Brass Institute, the International Horn Symposium, the Barry Tuckwell Institute, Hot Springs Music Festival and Eastern Music Festival.
NDSU Welcome Day
North Dakota State University President Dean Bresciani, Lt. Gov. Jack Dalrymple, student body President Kevin Black and one very special student led hundreds of first-year students through the front gates of campus at 11 a.m. the morning of Aug. 23 as a part of the Welcome Day ceremony.
The student was April Schmitz, Bismarck, who is majoring in equine studies. Schmitz was the first student who applied and was admitted to NDSU for the fall semester.
The students walked through the gates to the sounds of NDSU’s Gold Star Marching Band.
Schmitz graduated from Bismarck High School this past May. She is the daughter of Ron Schmitz and Tracy Humann. Her grandparents are Dorothy and the late Alvin Schmitz and LeRoy and Carol Humann, all of Bismarck.

The scholarship is awarded to high school seniors who have shown exemplary achievement in both high school grade-point average and in test scores.
This scholarship program is intended to honor and reward students who contribute to enhancing UND as vibrant and connected learners.
DSU scholarships
Dickinson State University has announced the 2010 recipient of the first “Character Counts Development Scholarship.” The scholarship was created in partnership with the Northern Lights Council of the Boys Scouts of America.
Justin Herner, Mott, was selected to receive the scholarship by the Northern Lights Council. A freshman computer science major at DSU, Herner is an Eagle Scout who continues to be in the Boys Scouts of America. Herner is also member of the National Honor Society and was recognized as the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association Young Tour essay winner.
The scholarship recognizes the positive impact scouting and other youth leadership programs have on character development. Applicants must complete an application; be a graduating high school senior; have demonstrated leadership ability in your troop/crew and a strong record of participation in activities outside of scouting; and provide a statement on “What receiving this ‘Character Counts’ Development Scholarship would mean to me.”
Kavlie graduates
Landon Kavlie, son of Gaylord and Cindy Kavlie, Bismarck, graduated from Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Mich., in May. Kavlie majored in computer science and mathematics.
