Smith graduates

Karin Stapleton Smith, Bismarck, is a March 31 graduate of Crown College in St. Bonifacius, Minn., and received her diploma at graduation ceremonies held on May 8. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in intercultural studies. She is married to Matthew Smith.

Scholarship received

Kathryn Jacobson has received a $500 Department of Art and Design Talent Scholarship from Minnesota State University Moorhead. She is the daughter of Carl and Sue Jacobson, Mandan.

The Talent award is given to students who demonstrate talent in art, music, speech or theater.

Students awarded

Four students from Valley City State University have been selected to receive Graduate Student Research Assistantship awards through the North Dakota Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research program. The awards recognize the academic achievement of these students and provide significant financial support as they pursue M.S. and/or Ph.D. degrees in science, engineering and mathematics at the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University.

The area student receiving the award is: Steven Fasching, Mandan. He has majors in fisheries and wildlife science and biology, was named VCSU’s Outstanding Fisheries and Wildlife Student and will conduct his research within the Department of Natural Resource Management at NDSU.

Commencement

ShaLane Reeves-Torkelson, daughter of Linnea Reeves, Bismarck, and David Torkelson, Fargo, participated in the commencement ceremony at the College of Saint Benedict held on May 8 in St. Joseph, Minn. She was a candidate to receive a bachelor of arts degree in French and Hispanic studies.

Scholarships given

Twenty-four FFA students in North Dakota have received collectively $27,500 in scholarship funds from a variety of sponsors. Below are the recipients and sponsors of the scholarships.

The following area students received scholarships from the following companies:

$1,000 from Alliance Pipeline — Jenny Vandehoven from the Carrington FFA Chapter and Whitney Hansen from the Berthold FFA Chapter.

$1,000 from the ND FFA Foundation — Nikki Fideldy from the Hebron FFA Chapter, Adam Bettenhausen from the Wishek FFA Chapter, Trenton Bruner from the Drake/Anamoose FFA Chapter, Katie Woodbury from the Stanley FFA Chapter, Kayla Crooker from the Killdeer FFA Chapter and Kelsie Flemmer from the Beulah FFA Chapter.

$1,500 each from the Monsanto Company Commitment to Agriculture Scholarships — Brittney Klein from the Garrison FFA Chapter and Chase Rosenau from the Carrington FFA Chapter.

$1,500 from the Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Company of Iowa — Jessie Topp from the Carrington FFA Chapter.

$1,000 from RAM Trucks — Logan Wald from the Napoleon FFA Chapter.

Paswa accepted

Neiko Paswa, Mandan, has been accepted and has chosen to attend the University of Minnesota, Crookston. He will begin studies in fall 2010.

Paswa is a graduate of Bismarck High School and will study health sciences pre-professional at the university. He is the son of Charles Paswa and Ericka Richardson.

Scholarship started

The Dickinson State University Foundation has established the Myrtle Erikson Dynes ’53 Elementary Education Scholarship that will be awarded to deserving students pursuing elementary education degrees who are enthusiastic, fun, adventuresome and energetic.

One scholarship will be provided during the 2010-11 year and thereafter, two scholarships will be provided. Top consideration will be given to graduates from a North Dakota high school who have completed all of their studies to date at DSU with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5.

The recipients are to have completed their sophomore year in teacher education and be at least provisionally admitted to the Department of Teacher Education as outlined in the current DSU catalog.

Once selected for the scholarship the recipient can renew the scholarship for one additional year, their senior year. The scholarship nominees must complete a one-page (maximum) essay in order to be eligible for the scholarship. The topic will be determined by Sept. 15 of each year. The 2010 year topic was: Describe why you have chosen the career path of elementary education.

Recipients are nominated by the Department of Teacher Education with input from the donor to the University Scholarship Committee for final approval.

Scholarship given

Alyssa Miller, daughter of Bob and Renae Miller, Mandan, has been selected to receive the North Dakota State University Geraldine B. Larson Scholarship and Fargo VFW Scholarship. The Larson Scholarship is in the amount of $750, and the VFW Scholarship is in the amount of $500.

Miller is a senior majoring in accounting and English.

Wollmann admitted

McKenzie Wollmann, daughter of Troy and Marita Wollmann, Bismarck, has been admitted to North Dakota State University “with distinction.” She will enter NDSU in fall 2010 and plans to major in landscape architecture. Distinction means that NDSU is acknowledging Wollmann as an honor student.

University of Mary

Courtney Plante, Quintessa Glaser, Micheal Frenzel, Joyanah Arumarajah, Megan Glock, Shawn Small, Ryan Meidinger, Steve Serr, Arron Gross, Derek Hopfauf, Ashley Barrios, Brianna Snider, Kendra Schafer, Thomas Vander Wal, Andrew Loftesnes, Hannah Ottmar, Regina Stoner, Lydia Solberg, Megan Glueckert, Elizabeth Schneider, SaCora Hopfauf, Evan Bloom, Michael Mortenson, Halie Knopik, Nikkita Starr, Allison Opp, Courtney Burgad and Seth Tescher are among hundreds of new students about to pursue a degree at the University of Mary, starting the fall semester of 2010.

Plante, a graduate of Bismarck High School,plans to major in music education and participate in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is the daughter of Parnel and Mary Plante, Bismarck.

Glaser, a graduate of Century High School, plans to major in education and play soccer. She is the daughter of Dave and Sheila Glaser, Bismarck.

Frenzel, a graduate of CHS, plans to major in physical education, continue volunteering for Special Olympics and play soccer. He is the son of Lanie and Sarah Frenzel, Bismarck.

Arumarajah, a graduate of CHS, plans to major in pre-pharmacy. She is the daughter of Armarajah Muthian and Ratna Arumarajah, Bismarck.

Glock, a graduate of CHS, plans to major in nursing. She is the daughter of Lynn and Sue Glock, Bismarck.

Small, a graduate of BHS, plans to major in biology. He is the son of Walter and Julie Small, Bismarck.

Meidinger, a graduate of CHS, plans to major in occupational therapy and be part of the track and field team. He is the son of Don and Judy Meidinger, Bismarck.

Serr plans to double major in physical therapy and sports medicine and play baseball. He is the son of Merrill and Alice Serr, Mandan.

Gross plans to major in athletic training and play football. He is the son of Marty Gross and Cheryl Gustafson, both of Mandan.

Hopfauf plans to major in athletic training and play football. He is the son of Kevin and Roxann Hopfauf, Mandan.

Barrios plans to major in criminal justice and participate in speech. She is the daughter of Larry and Carla Barrios, Mandan.

Snider plans to major in occupational therapy. She is the daughter of David and Deb Snider, Mandan.

Schafer plans to major in occupational therapy and perhaps be part of the Marauders Cheer Team. She is the daughter Matt and Jessie Schafer, Mandan.

Vander Wal plans to major in computer information systems, be part of the popular and successful DEX Team and play football. He is the son of Thomas and Lori Vander Wal, Mandan.

Loftesnes, a graduate of Kubasaki High School, plans to major in social and behavioral science and play football. He is the son of Gregory and Denise Loftesnes stationed in Japan, the grandson of Frances Loftesnes, Minot, and Matt and Agnes Fettig, Bismarck, and nephew of Teri Kvamme, Voltaire, and Debra Fettig and Howard and Janelle Loftesnes, all of Bismarck.

Ottmar, a graduate of Killdeer High School, plans to major in psychology. She is the daughter of Garry and Wanda Ottmar, Manning.

Stoner, a graduate of Williston High School, plans to major in music education and participate in music. She is the daughter of Luke and Becky Stoner, Williston.

Solberg, a graduate of Williston High School, plans to major in music education and participate in music. She is the daughter of Alan and Sandra Solberg, Williston.

Glueckert, a graduate of Williston High School, plans to major in special education and participate in track. She is the daughter of Christine Glueckert, Williston, and the late Ben Glueckert.

Schneider, a graduate of Kidder County Steele High School, plans to major in education. She is the daughter of Brian and Jill Schneider, Tuttle.

Hopfauf, a graduate of Grant County High School, plans to major in physical therapy. She is the daughter Craig Fergel, Flasher and Michelle Seibel, Carson.

Bloom, a graduate of Richardton-Taylor High School, plans to major in radiologic technology. He is the son of Harlan Jr. and Rhonda Bloom, Taylor.

Mortenson, a graduate of Trinity High School, plans to major in pre-engineering and play football. He is the son of Kent and Diane Mortenson, Dickinson.

Knopik, a graduate of Trinity High School, plans to major in elementary education. She is the daughter of Marvin and Audrey Knopik from Dickinson.

Starr, a graduate of Beulah High School, plans to major in music performance and be active in pep band and choir. She is the daughter of Clinton and Sandra Starr, Beulah.

Opp, a graduate of Hazen High School, plans to go into pre-med as a biology major and play volleyball and run track and field. She is the daughter of Leland and Jennifer Opp, Hazen.

Burgad, a graduate of Strasburg High School, plans to major in exercise science. She is the daughter of Arlen and Cindi Burgad, Linton.

Tescher, a graduate of Beach High School, has yet to declare a major. He is the son of Ray and Jill Tescher, Beach.

Scholarships given

Valley City State University has awarded scholarships to Angela Morford and Jacob Leno.

Morford has been awarded the Cathy Jahn Memorial Art Education Award and the Linda Whitney Art Supply Scholarship by the Division of Fine Arts and both the Janet Monroe Wendschlag and Bryan John Wendschlag Memorial Scholarship and the Hazel McBride Scholarship by the School of Education and Graduate Studies for the 2010-2011 academic year. She is a senior pursuing majors in art education and elementary education. She is the daughter of Greg and Mary Ann Morford, Bismarck.

 Leno has been awarded VCSU Alumni Upper-Level Scholarship by the Division of Fine Arts for the 2010-2011 academic year. He is a senior pursuing a degree in art education. He is the son of Timothy Leno and Patricia Leno, Bismarck.

Scholarships given

The following students at Bemidji State University, Bemidji, Minn., are scholarship recipients for the 2010-2011 school year: Leah Palmer, McKee/Havumaki Scholarship, Tom Swanson Brass Quintet Endowment, John and Dana Yourd Endowment and Myrtie Hunt Alumni Scholarship;  and Alex Ferderer, Fulton Gallagher Music Award and Elks Vocal Scholarship.

Scholarship given

Three area students are recipients of the Excellence Scholarship from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn.: Kate Hausauer, Bismarck High School graduate, daughter of Mark and Kari Hausauer, Bismarck; Erika Jossart, Century High School graduate, daughter of Brad and Robin Jossart, Bismarck; and Emily Knudson, CHS graduate, daughter of Allen and Kari Knudson, Bismarck.

Credo Honors

Ryan Solberg, Bismarck, is the recipient of the Presidential Distinction Award and will participate in the Credo Honors program at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn.

A graduate of St. Mary’s Central High School, he is the son of Wayne and Becky Solberg, Bismarck.

Kingstad enrolls

Anna Kingstad, daughter of Tim Kingstad and Linda Kingstad, both of Bismarck, will be enrolling at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. She is a graduate of Century High School.

Seeberg graduates

Nicole Seeberg, a graduate of Bismarck High School, has graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato, with a bachelor of science in sociology and corrections. She has accepted a summer position as a case manager at the Minnesota Correction Facility, Shakopee, for adult women offenders.

Seeberg’s parents are Hal and Shelley Seeberg, Rosemount, Minn., and grandparents are Jack and Barb Neubauer and Edna Seeberg, all of Bismarck.

Baltzer graduates

Ann Baltzer, the daughter of Mike and Renae Baltzer, Bismarck, graduated from Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., during the colleges 121st exercises held on May 15. Baltzer received a liberal arts degree in psychology. She is a graduate of Bismarck High School.

In addition, Baltzer was honored at the Macalester College Honors Convocation on May 14. She received the Walter D. Mink Endowed Prize for psychology and graduated magna cum laude.

Juris doctor degree

Sarah Mielke received the juris doctor degree from Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va., during commencement exercises for the School of Law held on May 8.

While at Washington and Lee, Mielke received the following honors or participated in the following activities: cum laude; Frederic L. Kirgis Jr. International Law Award; president of the International Law Society; president of the American Constitution Society; managing editor of the German Law Journal; resident scholar of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity; and volunteer reading tutor for all three years.

Honors list

Students from the region were among the 564 names on the Chadron State College, Chadron, Neb., academic honors lists for the spring 2010 semester. A total of 339 students were named to the dean’s list, which requires a grade-point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Students must be enrolled in 12 credit hours of coursework during the semester to qualify.

The area students named to the dean’s list are: Montanna Barnett, Lemmon, S.D., legal studies; and Jessica Weishapl, Lemmon, child development.

Barnett was also inducted into the college’s chapter of the Cardinal Key Honor Society.

Cardinal Key’s purpose is to recognize achievement in scholarship, extracurricular activities and to advance the personal development of women at Chadron State. Women with a grade-point average of 3.25 or above and who will have junior status by the fall were eligible to apply for a limited number of memberships with the national organization of Cardinal Key.

Dean’s list

Tori Wisthoff was one of 161 students at Bryan College, Dayton, Tenn., to be named to the dean’s list for the spring 2010 semester. To be eligible, a student must earn a grade average in the top 25 percent of student grades.

Wisthoff is the daughter of Stephen and Grace Wisthoff, Bismarck.

BSN degree earned

Shannon Gullerud, Bismarck, a nursing student at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, received her BSN degree during the spring commencement exercises held on May 22

Scholarships given

The North Dakota Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators has awarded two $250 scholarships to North Dakota high school seniors who plan to attend North Dakota colleges and universities this fall.

Winners of the scholarship are Katelin Dukart, Dickinson High School; and Matthew Seibel, Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock High School.

The colleges these aspiring students are considering to attend this fall include Bismarck State College, North Dakota State University and North Dakota State College of Science.

Frenzel awarded

Mark Frenzel, economics major at Minnesota State University Moorhead was awarded his bachelor’s degree (magna cum laude) in economics on May 14 at MSUM’s commencement ceremonies.

This fall, Frenzel will begin the master’s program in economics at Claremont Graduate School. He is the son of Wayne and Diane Frenzel, Mandan.

Scholarship given

Reid Jungling, Mandan, is the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from First Community Credit Union. Jungling’s proven ability to achieve academic excellence and his wide involvement in extra curricular activities has enabled him to achieve this accomplishment. He is the son of Lorell and Renae Jungling and plans to attend the University of Mary in the fall.

The following area students will also be receiving a scholarship towards their college academia: Jeffrey Strom, Dawson; Alissa Bettenhausen, Wishek; Jenna Gross, Napoleon; and Jonathan Reich, Medina.

Students awarded

The University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences presented awards recently to second-year medical students for outstanding academic achievement.

Luke Roller, the son of Benedict and Diane Roller of Bismarck, received the North Dakota Medical Association’s Integration of Basic Science and Clinical Application Award, given to a student who demonstrates the ability to analyze problems, generate hypotheses, set priorities, test hypotheses and formulate alternative hypotheses, draw appropriate conclusions and apply the knowledge to patient cases.

Roller, who has spent his first two years on the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences campus in Grand Forks, will now go on for further education in hospitals and clinics in Bismarck with a practicing physician who will serve as a faculty member for the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Scholarships given

North Dakota Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Wayne G. Sanstead has announced the 23 recipients of the Robert C. Byrd Scholarships for 2010. The Byrd Scholarship is awarded to exceptionally talented students who show promise of continued academic excellence in postsecondary education. Points are awarded based on students’ grade-point average, ACT/SAT score, academic awards/activities and their response to two essay questions regarding their career/life goals and what they identify as a problem/issue facing the U.S. today.

This year the department received 61 applications and was able to provide 23 students with a $1,500 renewable scholarship at an institution of higher education of their choice.

The area recipients include: Macy Blank, Williston High School; Oliver Boeckel, Bismarck High School; Brittany Gefroh, Century High School; Aaron Grinsteinner, Trinity High School, Dickinson; Kari Kusler, Kulm High School; Margaret Lambert, Williston High School; Megan Ryckman, Williston High School; Mathias Staricka, Williston High School; Vanessa Stumpf, Mandan High School; Adam Swigost, St. Mary’s Central High School; and Jessica Wass, Century High School.

Scholarship given

Lindsey Duppong has received a $750 Talent Scholarship for Art and Design from Minnesota State University Moorhead. She is the daughter of Lee and Debbie Duppong, Bismarck.

The Talent Award is given to students who demonstrate talent in art, music, speech or theater.

Williams graduates

Savannah Williams, a resident of Dickinson, received a degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz. She received a degree in visual arts.

Dean’s list

The following students have been named to the St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, Minn., spring semester dean’s list (those with an asterisk by their name had a 4.0 grade-point average): *Lindsey Silverthorn, Beulah; Taryn Chase, *Kristie Keller, Kimberly Nagel and Jessica Wills, all of Bismarck; Shaynna Mann, Dickinson; and Francesca Chapman, Williston.

To be eligible for the honor, students must have a GPA of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
