Today is the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day, and the North Dakota Department of Health is urging people at risk for HIV/AIDS to get tested.

More than 400 cases of HIV/AIDS have been reported in North Dakota since surveillance began in 1984.

About one-fourth of the people estimated to be HIV positive are believed to be unaware of their infections.

Denise Larson, HIV prevention coordinator for the Health Department, says World AIDS Day is a great opportunity to raise awareness.

" FWIW, the observation on the State Capitol steps was in 2006, and the 2007 event was at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship with an even smaller attendance. "

" It'd be nice for the State Health Department to do a bit more public awareness or such for Worlds AIDS Day than simply an Associated Press blip tucked in the corner of page 4B in the Tribune. But then again, when Dakota OutRight hosted a World AIDS Day observation in 2007 on the State Capitol steps and invited the Health Department and the media, none showed up for that event... "

" I'm not sure where you're getting your information, but I think you're terribly confused. Wikipedia is always a good place to start. Although it's not always 100% reliable, there are typically sources cited if nothing else. Even a textbook could give you the basics here, though.

" no one has ever seen a HIV virus, so if you are diagnosed with it, ask them to show you the virus. AIDS is caused by a weakend immune system, so a lot of illnesses cause AIDS. "
