10 years ago (1998):Mitch Raile developed a reliever's mentality by getting beat around in his first relief role at the Western Division tournament.
That experience made him the hero as Mandan rallied from six runs down in the ninth to beat Grand Forks 10-9 in 10 innings at the state American Legion baseball tournament.
John Mosser went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in, while Ron Bethke, Jayden Bitz and Mike Crouse collected two hits each. Tracy Geffre went 2-for-4 with two doubles, while Raile knocked in two runs and Jon Arenz scored two runs. Raile got the win in relief of Arenz.
Jamestown beat host Bismarck 10-5 in another first-round game.
Mike Gossett hit his 20th home run of the season and knocked in two runs, while Brandon Aman was 3-for-5 with a double. Tim Gienger added two hits. Jesse Schuchard took the loss and was relieved by Scott McDonald.
20 years ago (1988): DICKINSON - The game had well been decided in Bismarck's favor when injury was added to insult. While running off the field, Mandan American Legion baseball coach Jim Koch stepped in a hole and sprained his ankle.
Koch limped to the medical shack and the Governors hobbled Mandan 11-1 in a Western Division tournament game cut to seven innings because of the 10-run rule.
"I hope he's OK," Bismarck coach Wayne Horner said of Koch.
For the Governors, Ty Hauglie, Jason Pudwill and Eric Rudolf had two hits each. Hauglie and Lee Demarias drove in two runs apiece, while Jon Gums collected three runs batted in. Jeff Schulz tallied three hits, while Paul Cook finished 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Gums and Demarias hit home runs, while Pudwill picked up the win and J.T. Noehre finished off the game.
Kurt Miller had a hit and a run batted in for the Chiefs, while Scott Ressler took the loss and Damian Huettl also pitched.
50 years ago (1958): Hank Siems hurled no-hit ball for unbeaten Elks as the City Softball League champions racked KFYR 17-2 for their 14th straight league victory.
On other action, Nicola's laced Knights of Columbus 20-10 to take over second place and Werner's put on a barrage to overwhelm Capital Commercial College 27-5.
Jim Larson paced Elks with three hits and Burt Siems had two. Siems didn't allow KFYR to get a ball into the outfield.
Ken Anderson won for Nicola's, while Leo Feist took the loss for Knights. Anderson collected three hits, while Dick Patzman had three for Knights.
Gross, Morris and Tom Fetch each had three hits for Werner's against CCC.
