WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Monroe Community College 77, United Tribes 54
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - No. 1-seeded Monroe Community College of New York rolled past No. 16 United Tribes Technical College 77-54 Tuesday night in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II women's basketball national tournament.
United Tribes, with only six players on its roster, led 21-16 at the end of the first quarter, Monroe took charge in the second frame, outscoring the Thunderbirds 21-2.
"After a fairly strong first quarter, I felt like we relaxed and I'm not not sure why," said UTTC coach Kia Herbel. "It was disappointing for us all. And once we went cold, we really went cold. That was as poor a quarter as we've had all year."
The onslaught continued in the third quarter, with Monroe extending its lead to 65-39.
Terae Briggs led the Thunderbirds with 23 points and nine rebounds. McKayla Peltier added 13.
The Thunderbirds will play Kankakee Community College Thursday morning at 11 a.m.
"We know we can play better ... now we'll have another chance to prove ourselves," Herbel said.
